Boxing, anti-fascism and two Olympics - the story of Szapsel and Gerszon Rotholc

During the Miasteczko Poznań Festival, there will be a meeting with Jeremi Galdamez from the Volunteers of Freedom Association (Stowarzyszenie Ochotnicy Wolności), who will present a story entitled "Boxing, anti-fascism and two Olympics - the story of Szapsel and Gerszon Rotholc" about the two Rotholc brothers, Jewish boxers who went to two Olympics in 1936: the official one in Nazi Berlin and the anti-fascist one in Barcelona. Their intention to participate in the sporting Olympics had a major impact on their lives.

In particular, the fate of Gerszon Rotholc, a completely forgotten figure - in contrast to his older brother Szapsel, the boxing star of interwar Poland, will be examined. Gerszon Rotholc, as an anti-fascist volunteer, took part in the Spanish Civil War in the ranks of the J. Dąbrowski International Brigade.

The would-be participation of Jewish-Polish athletes in the People's Olympics in Barcelona interrupted by an attempted military putsch against the Spanish Republic and their involvement in the anti-fascist struggle alongside the Spanish workers will also be presented.

23 November, 6.00 pm / Łazęga Poznańska
